ProStart Students Shine at the 2026 Taste Oregon Legislative Reception
On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, ORLA's Taste Oregon Legislative Reception brought together legislators, hospitality leaders, and workforce development partners at the Salem Convention Center’s Santiam River Room for an evening that helped underscore the importance of Oregon's hospitality and tourism industry to state policymakers.
A standout presence at this year’s reception was the ProStart Culinary Team from Dayton High School, led by educator Krista Carpino. Her students were given a unique, real-world opportunity to actively participate in a high-profile legislative event—showcasing not only their culinary talent, but also their professionalism, confidence, and readiness for careers in hospitality.
Throughout the evening, students prepared and served thoughtfully crafted, high-quality bites while engaging directly with state legislators, Representatives, legislative staff, and hospitality industry members. These interactions offered students invaluable exposure to the broader ecosystem that supports Oregon’s hospitality industry, from policy and advocacy to business leadership and workforce investment.
Participation in events like the Taste Oregon Legislative Reception exemplifies the power of work-based learning. Students practiced essential employability skills—communication, time management, teamwork, and professionalism—while representing their school and the ProStart program in a real industry setting. For many, this was their first opportunity to network with policymakers and industry professionals, reinforcing the connection between education, workforce development, and economic impact.
Krista Carpino’s leadership and commitment to excellence were evident in the students’ preparation and performance. Her dedication to aligning classroom learning with real-world application continues to elevate ProStart as a proven pathway for students pursuing careers in culinary and hospitality.
The Oregon Hospitality Foundation is proud to support experiences like this that bring workforce development to life. By placing students at the table—literally and figuratively—we are investing in the next generation of hospitality professionals while demonstrating the critical role programs like ProStart play in strengthening Oregon’s talent pipeline.
The Taste Oregon Legislative Reception was more than a celebration of food; it was a powerful reminder that the future of hospitality is already here, learning, leading, and serving with purpose.
